
Paul
Ormandy is a multi-faceted, comprehensive percussionist. A keen interest in
contemporary popular and global musics has led him on a journey of performance
throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Japan.
His performance experience spans a broad variety of settings ranging from
Afro-Cuban music to steelband, flamenco to Broadway show orchestras, world
drumming festivals to corporate communication education.
Some of his past and present Toronto area ensemble credits include, Ilédè
Afro-Cuban Music and Dance Ensemble, Candela Flamenca The Passion of Flamenco
Music and Dance, Kekeli Ghanaian Drumming and Dance Ensemble, the Afropan
Steelband, Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, and The Canadian Opera Company
orchestra.
Internationally Paul¹s credits have included membership in the Phase II Pan
Groove Steel Orchestra (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad), Heartbeat - Expo 2000
(Hanover, Germany), Musaïc - Expo 1998 (Lisbon, Portugal), and Mika Yoshida¹s
Marimbop in Japan. He also appears on numerous radio, television and CD
releases.
Most recently Paul served as a full-time orchestra member in the Toronto
production of the Disney musical The Lion King and Mel Brooks¹ musical The
Producers .
As an educator he is currently a Professor of Cuban Music at York University,
Visiting Artist in Percussion at the Etobicoke School of the Arts and has
previously served on faculty at The Royal Conservatory of Music and the
University of Toronto.
Paul is an Honours graduate from both the University of Toronto and Interlochen
Arts Academy and has studied at the internationally renowned Banff Centre for
the Arts on a number of occasions.
