Didgeridoo
and Djembe Intensive with Lou Robinson and Ray Dillard

and join us for this new and exciting addition to Mountain Rythym &
Tanglefoot Lodge’s ongoing percussion programs! We are flying Lou
Robinson,
one of the best known didge instructors around in from Portland, Oregon to work
with Ray Dillard in creating an amazing weekend experience. Examine the ancient
Australian didgeridoo and the African djembe in depth. Classes will focus both
on techniques for each instrument and on the interaction between them. During
downtime, jam out with other amazing people, eat great food, chill out in the
hot tub, and take in performances by the professionals.
Friday
evening
Didge
class #1 - Introduction to didgeridoo: Includes background and historical
info on didge as well as making the basic drone sound and learning cheek
squeezes. Saturday
Breakfast Djembe
class #1 – An introduction to some of the historical “roots” of the
djembe. A combination of technical
and musical concepts will be covered. Didge
class #2 - Creating color and rhythms with Didge - Includes use of tongue,
diaphragm and vocals to make your didge playing rich and varied. Lunch Djembe
class #2 – An investigation of the “soft side” of djembe playing!
This session will look at applying North Indian, Middle Eastern and North
African “finger” techniques to the djembe. Didge
class #3 - Circular Breathing with the Didge - This session will focus on
developing the natural coordination required to learn the art of circular
breathing, giving you the ability to play continuously without having to stop to
take a breath. Dinner Evening
talk, performance and jam – Lou
and Ray will introduce some personal concepts and ideas for creating good
“ensemble”. These will then be
demonstrated through a duet performance, which will slowly morph into a full-out
ensemble experience for all participants. Sunday
Breakfast Djembe
class #3 – This session will introduce the use of the total sonic range of the
djembe to create rich, multi-faceted rhythms not usually associated with djembe
playing. Didge
class #4 - Circular Breathing and
Technique Integration with Didge - A session to put together all of the
techniques and integrate them to create rhythms and moods. Session also to
serves as an opportunity to address particular individual needs and to work on
reinforcing circular breathing techniques. Combined
Drum & Didge Closing class – This final jam will bring together all of the
material covered into a mix of didge and drums, allowing an exploration of this
most unique and capable combination! Late
lunch/closing feast and pictures (2-3pm) Cost:
The
deposit for this retreat is $125 and is applied to your final bill. Cost is all
inclusive (food, accommodations,
classes, and use of facilities).
Cost depends on the type of accommodations and what, if any, didgeridoo you are
purchasing for the event. You
are welcome to “try before you buy” on the retreat and make you final didge
choice on the retreat. There
are plenty of extra djembes so feel free to use a loaner if you don’t have
