Shamanic
Mask Making Workshop
Concealing,
revealing, and healing.
In
order to maximize the depth of the experience, this weekend course is designed
to be predominantly experiential. The theory component will give background
information on general shamanic concepts, journeying, shapeshifting, personality
and mask theory from both traditional spiritual and psychological perspectives.
Participants will initially journey to clarify their objectives and seek
assistance. Then, after an orientation on different styles of mask making,
journeying will be used to uncover, understand and personify disowned elements
of the psyche. These personified elements will then be used as the basis for the
first mask. On Saturday evening, supported by night, fire, and drum magic,
participants will be invited to don their masks and use this powerful
transformative tool to explore and unify.
The
final day will based around journeying, mask making, and donning for so called
light elements, or aspects of self the participants are trying to call forth
into their lives.
This
is an intermediate level course. Previous shamanic experience is not necessary,
but is helpful. There is a Foundation for Shamanic Studies introductory course
running Oct. 13-14, 2007 if you would like to do a focus course on general
shamanic practices such as journeying first.
No
artistic experience is needed. Some of the most amazing masks come from people
with no preconceptions.
This
course will be facilitated by Russ Hazard and Peter Christian. Russ Hazard is
the director and head instructor of Tanglefoot Lodge, a center for yogic,
shamanic and related consciousness studies. Peter Christian is a shamanic
practitioner and facilitator grounded in North American and Amazonian
traditions.
Basic
materials for the masks are provided, but if you would like any specific
decorations, we suggest you bring them.
